Space is not an illusion. Stars in the sky are actually really far away which is why they appear as point-like light sources. You actually see them. It's light from a distant star. Light "spreading out" wouldn't make them appear larger, just dimmer, which is why they are many of orders of magnitude dimmer than our sun. As you walk away from a flashlight at night does it appear to get larger as it gets dimmer farther away? No, it gets smaller. So obvious.
